Imagine 15 students enjoying dinner in the Cowell provost’s backyard on a beautiful spring evening. As they enjoy a delicious homemade dinner with Cowell College Provost Faye Crosby and Oakes College co-founder Ron Saufley over the iconic view of the Monterey Bay, they avidly discuss infrastructure costs, over-enrollment, and other issues higher education faces in today’s world. While this experience might seem to be straight out of the early days of UC Santa Cruz, it is a regular meeting of The Place of Higher Education in a Democratic Society, a small seminar course being offered by Cowell College for the spring 2016 quarter.
This class, which allows students to engage with the big ideas behind higher education in a small, seminar-based environment, is one of several five-unit enhancement courses Cowell College offers each term. It provides students with a vital opportunity to make connections with fellow students and faculty, interview early UC Santa Cruz alumni, and conduct their own research. While current Provost Crosby has generously offered to teach this seminar every spring, the college is seeking funds to hire a paid instructor so the course can continue after Crosby steps down at the end of this year. Your contribution to this project will help us hire a new instructor, giving dozens of students an opportunity to partake in this wonderful experience in future years.
