At Merrill College, students learn by doing. Merrill students mentor middle schoolers in underserved communities, research alongside their professors, and intern at local agencies. They participate in the world around them and make it a better place.
We offer a multitude of ways for students to engage in experiential education, both on and off campus.
Classroom Connection engages students in the community, specifically focusing on education. Undergraduates volunteer in an elementary school classroom or in a middle school after-school tutoring program two days each week, attend course meetings, and receive class credits. Their work helps create a culture of college-going among populations that might not otherwise consider it.
Merrill Undergraduate Research Mentorships allow students to work as research apprentices, interacting one-on-one with faculty members, assisting with publishing papers, and working in labs. These mentorships are designed to provide research, personal, and professional development for Merrill students.
Similarly, in Merrill Field Study, students get to work with local organizations and agencies to learn how they operate and come together in class to analyze those operations. Students become a part of a greater learning community and, through participation in field study, bring back both practical skills and expanded awareness to share with one another.
In addition to the practical applications of Merrill’s learning-by-doing ethos, the college is offering two new classes. The first, Careers in Public Service, will connect students with alumni in public service and prepare students for careers in the field. The second, Leadership for Social Change, will explore concepts of leadership, community development, and community service.
Since its founding, Merrill College has been committed to providing opportunities for students to actively participate in the real world around them as part of their experiential education. Making a gift not only supports Merrill students and the local community, but also furthers our mission to increase opportunities to engage in this hands-on approach to learning.
