The mission of the People of Color Sustainability Collective is to make UC Santa Cruz a leader not just in mainstream sustainability but also environmental justice, in recognition of our changing demographics and pressing ecological challenges. PoCSC is an initiative created by the Ethnic Resource Centers that is housed in the American Indian Resource Center. PoCSC works in collaboration with Colleges Nine and Ten and the Campus Sustainability Office, creating opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to engage in critical dialogues about the intersections between race, class, gender, culture, justice, and the environment through social media, events, workshops, tabling, and an annual student retreat.
The People of Color Sustainability Collective is raising funds to bring academics, activists, community leaders, and professionals of color in environmental justice–related work to our campus. These speakers will create an opportunity for students of color to engage with individuals who will broaden their knowledge of social and environmental justice issues. These events will also validate and encourage conversation around the use of cultural and traditional knowledge to foster the intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives needed to solve our world’s most pressing ecological challenges. As a result of bringing these speakers and creating these spaces, PoCSC is helping to diversify the pipeline of scholars and leaders in the field of environmental sustainability—a field whose events, programming, and research often don’t include non-white perspectives.
