We are an interdisciplinary department—celebrating our 15-year anniversary this year—that studies how processes occurring in the United States affect those in Latin America and vice versa. We are passionate about our students, 84 percent of whom are first-generation. They receive interdisciplinary training along with language instruction within a social justice framework. We would like to fund 1) graduate student fellowships, 2) travel for graduate students to attend conferences, and 3) support for undocumented undergraduate students. Funding graduate students will enable them to get a break from working as TAs, complete their Ph.D.s, and go on to find positions within academia so they can train the next generation. By attending professional conferences graduate students will network with important leaders in the field and learn how to present their work effectively, all of which may lead to positions and/or postdoctoral fellowships. Scholarships for undocumented undergraduates are crucial since these students do not qualify for financial aid and cannot work, so assistance can make a huge difference in their ability to finish their degrees. Please help us prosper!
