Slugs for Health and Growth at UC Santa Cruz is a group of students whose purpose is to support undergraduate and graduate students in recovery in partnership with Student Health Services and the colleges. The group also works to educate the entire UC Santa Cruz community about resources to meet those needs in and out of the classroom.
Nationally, it is estimated that nearly 20 percent of young adults 18 to 25 experience alcohol or illicit drug dependence or abuse in a given year. College campuses present special challenges to those who are fighting their way out of that experience. At UC Santa Cruz we are proactively working to ensure that our bright and talented students in recovery have the support they need for academic and personal success on campus and long after.
Our goal is to build a larger, stronger, and more cohesive community of support so students in recovery feel connected and have access to friends and classmates who understand their struggles and successes.
Building ongoing and permanent financial support for our collegiate recovery community will ensure students have available services to help them succeed.
Funding opportunities include operational funds for a dedicated program/office space, staffing to manage programming and maintain office hours seven days a week, academic and social events for students in recovery, and funds to send students to recovery-related conferences and workshops.
