The Lamat Institute (Lamat means “star” in Mayan) provides meaningful scientific educational opportunities for historically marginalized students in astronomy and astrophysics. The intensive eight-week summer program, targeting California community college students and others from four-year institutions is designed to introduce students to astrophysical research methods and tools through original projects in computational astrophysics.
“Some of the brightest minds in astrophysics are like undiscovered exoplanets. They are out there, but no one knows about them just yet.”
Selected interns work closely with UCSC faculty and PhD student mentors from the Physics, Earth & Planetary Sciences, and Astronomy & Astrophysics Departments.
