Match Opportunity: Lou and Leslie Grate are generously matching all donations, dollar for dollar, up to $500.
We urgently need to tackle Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in fundamentally new ways, as one person per minute now receives the diagnosis of AD, and it has become the 6th leading cause of death in the US. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, causing an annual worldwide financial burden of more than $818 billion.
Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Jevgenij Raskatov at UC Santa Cruz, is pioneering unique approaches to Alzheimer’s research, utilizing a process he created called Amyloid β Chiral Inactivation (Aβ-CI), which when mixed with their mirror images can form two-dimensional periodic structural folds, in which extended peptide strands are arrayed with alternating chirality, creating rippled β-sheets.
Too much chemistry? Yes perhaps. But here's what you need to know: if successful, Dr. Raskatov's Aβ-CI approach may produce a fundamentally new way to combat Alzheimer’s disease, and may also have the potential to be extended to other therapeutic applications.
Significant additional research is required, and the time is now. Your donations will go directly to support the Raskatov Lab's efforts in understanding and applying the Chiral Inactivation approach towards a solution to Alzheimer’s disease.
The medical community has been pursuing solutions to AD since 1963 without success, incurring more than 400 failed clinical trials. It's time to try a new approach.
