For the last eight years the Terry Freitas Cafe has been a vibrant and dynamic hotspot for student engagement; a welcoming space for students to study, connect, express themselves, and explore social justice on a global level.
The Cafe was dedicated in 2012 in honor of Terry Freitas, an inspirational young alumnus who died in 1999 while working with the U’wa people of Colombia to resist oil companies who were pushing mineral extraction and development of U’wa lands. It was intended to be a space that would inspire students to continue on their own journeys in pursuit of global justice.
With this spirit in mind, the Terry Freitas Cafe is excited to announce the next phase of our mission to serve and support the Communities at Colleges Nine and Ten. We’re thrilled to be partnering with the UC Santa Cruz Basic Needs Team to make the Terry Freitas Cafe the newest Basic Needs Pantry on campus! The new Terry Freitas Cafe and Pantry will, of course, continue to be a hub for student life and expression, but now it will also play an active role in addressing food insecurity among our students.
Recent studies have shown that 48% of UCSC undergraduate students and 31% of graduate students experience food insecurity, lacking either access to sufficient food or sufficiently nutritious food. Alleviating food insecurity is shown to make a significant difference in overall student well-being, degree completion, and academic success.
Your donation to the Terry Freitas Cafe and Pantry will aid the creation of events that explore social justice, share important programs and resources that support the community, help fund the student staff who run the space and so much more!
