Smith Society Internships and Research Fellowships

Today is Giving Day! Please support the Smith Societybased in Cowell College, by helping to raise funds for internships and research fellowships for UCSC’s former foster youth and other Smith Society students.

Named in honor of the first Cowell College Provost, Page Smith and his wife Eloise, the Smith Society provides an intergenerational community, mentoring, and financial support to UC Santa Cruz students who lack the usual family support, such as former foster youth, orphans, those whose parents were in prison or mental health facilities, or those who experienced significant periods of homelessness growing up.

Our mission is to provide them with a supportive intergenerational community, to help them thrive in their pursuit of their dream of a college education. Smith internships and research fellowships give students an enriching opportunity to expand their educational experience. Giving Smith students the opportunity to participate in internships at local non-profit agencies or to do research with a UC Santa Cruz faculty member in their field of study have proven to be life-changing experiences.

The Smith Society is volunteer-driven and entirely funded by private donations. Today, we are seeking your help to raise $20,000 to fund Smith Internships and Research Fellowships for this academic year. We have two exciting challenges this Giving Day:

  • Double your impact! Smith Society founder Bill Dickinson (Cowell '68) will match every dollar donated on Giving Day up to $10,000.
  • Encourage your friends and family to support the Smith Society! We need your help unlocking an additional $2,000 from, Professor of MCD Biology and a key member of our Faculty Research Fellowship team, Grant Hartzog! This money will be ours if we get:
    • FIVE NEW donors of $100 or more between 11am and 2pm
    • FIVE NEW donors of $100 or more between 5pm and 8pm

Your donation today will give Smith students an amazing opportunity that will enhance their educational experience at UC Santa Cruz.

Smith students are so grateful for your support. Here is a message to you from one of our students Alyssa Tamboura:

As a current Smith student, I want to thank you for your generous support!  My education is only possible because others have believed in me and provided me with the resources to succeed.  Your donation directly supports me and all the other students who have the privilege of calling the Smith Society our family. (Alyssa is a College Ten 2021 graduate who is entering Yale Law School fall semester 2021.)

Thank you again for your support,

The Smith Society
