Your gift today will further our focus on the increase in frequency and intensity of wildfires driven by higher temperatures and longer periods of drought in the Bay Area.
The Society for Conservation Biology is an international professional organization dedicated to promoting the scientific study of phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biological diversity. In Santa Cruz, we promote that mission by connecting conservation practitioners throughout the California central coast region and advocating for diversity in conservation.
During the 2020-2021 academic year, we focused on programming that supports community-based conservation. In the spring, we proudly hosted the 2021 Bay Area Conservation Biology Symposium (a virtual event), which brought awareness to the Santa Cruz community of the conservation research being conducted by students at UCSC, UC Berkeley, and Stanford University.
This academic year we plan to work under the given conditions to host in-person or virtual panel discussions about how climate change increases the increase in frequency and intensity of wildfires in the Bay Area by causing higher temperatures and longer periods of drought. Through these events, we aim to illustrate the diversity of approaches to conservation, including community-based conservation, in a way that leads to action.
