Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to a total of $3,500 throughout the day. Matching funds were generously provided by Xingci Situ, Yulianna Ortega, and anonymous donors.
The STEM Diversity Program provides direct services that support students and bolsters their science identity through research training, professional development, and academic support. We support students from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds to achieve their educational and career goals by providing hands-on research experience and fostering a sense of inclusion, acceptance, community.
The STEM Diversity Program has mentored more than 1,500 undergraduates and 215 PhD students in STEM fields over the past 40 years.
While the student body on campus has diversified, the available funds to place more students in labs has remained static. Your donation will allow more first-generation, underrepresented students to gain hands-on research experience and develop the tools necessary to be successful and become competitive candidates for graduate programs.
One of the biggest deterrents to the retention of underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering, and math is financial inability, exacerbated high cost of living in Santa Cruz. Your donation will expand the number of students who receive stipends for undergraduate research and support programming like tutoring to ensure academic success. 100% of the proceeds will go to students who are not receiving financial support through other means. This allows them to gain research experience through a paid internship.
Your donation to our project will nurture the formation of a promising scientist. It also sends a statement of solidarity; the strength of our communities lies in the richness of diversity and inclusion, both strong values that UCSC fosters.
