The passion and drive to engage students in experiential field studies has never been stronger and more important. It is a pursuit that was seeded by one of the greatest legacies since the founding of the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department at UCSC by our emeritus faculty member John S. Pearse.
John’s field courses introduced so many of us to field studies and inspired us to pursue careers in field biology, and the EEB department continues to embrace and build upon that legacy. Indeed, EEB has more field courses now than ever, exposing undergraduates to more ecosystems around the world, unlike any other program across the University of California, perhaps the country.
Recent peer-reviewed research by our faculty demonstrated the great impact field courses have on students from underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, so we are more committed than ever to make these courses accessible to as many student as we can.
The John Pearse Field Course Endowment memorializes John’s teaching legacy by supporting EEB’s field courses in perpetuity. Right now, when students and the university are especially strapped for the funding required to offer these courses, there is no better time to support this endowment.
Were you inspired by field courses at UC Santa Cruz or elsewhere? Please give today to realize John’s vision and impact countless students into the future.
A generous anonymous donor will match your gift today up to $1,000.
