SIP CrEST (Creating Equity in STEAM) initiatives are a collection of outreach activities that provide opportunities for middle school, high school, and college students from historically excluded/marginalized groups to engage with STEAM research.
Dipping your toes in the water: Shadow the Scientists — FREE opportunities to observe research happening in real time. Interested students can eavesdrop on scientific research experiments in progress via Zoom screen sharing by astronomers, electron microscopists, ocean scientists, and others. An exciting new partnership with Native Skywatchers combines with Two-Eyed Seeing, observing science through the dual lens of scientific knowledge and traditional indigenous knowledge, bringing the whole person into engagement with the material.
Learning the swim strokes: FREE PyaR (Python and Research) tutorials where students of all ages can learn Python and R programming languages and how they are used in research. Currently the PyaR tutorials are in Python and R and done mostly in English, but they are in the process of being translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and several languages of the Indian subcontinent.
Taking the plunge: SIP (Science Internship Program), a 10-week immersive summer research opportunity online or on the UCSC campus. Interns are placed in research labs/groups across all five of UCSC's academic divisions and are mentored by UCSC graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and other campus affiliated researchers.
Translation and long-term impact: Alumni stay involved and GIVE BACK in several ways to support the upcoming cohorts through peer to peer advising, networking, and opportunities to stay involved in research as they grow on their academic and professional pathway.
Funds raised on UCSC Giving Day keep these initiatives FREE, and provide scholarships for students to participate in the summer Science Internship Program.
