The main purpose of our project, the Chinese Culture Fair, is to give a better understanding of Chinese culture and traditions to students within UCSC, which is a great opportunity for students to engage and learn outside of the classroom. Through the Chinese Culture Fair, the diverse group of students from UCSC will be able to learn about a more authentic Chinese culture, breaking media stereotypes that do not accurately portray Chinese culture, traditions, and ideology. Breaking such stereotypes gives students the opportunity to be more understanding, respectful, and inclusive of students from different parts of the world.
We are raising funds mainly for rental fees and materials fees, as most of the fair’s products will be given out to student participants for free. We want to reach as many students as possible with this fair, and that’s why we would like to have it funded by donations so we don’t have to charge for admission. We need funds for the venue, materials, and costumes, as well as potentially for musicians playing traditional or traditional-inspired music.
Our goal is $800–$1,000. The team is planning to reserve the multipurpose room in the College Nine/Lewis College Dining Hall for this Chinese Culture Fair. It will cost us between $150 to $350 to rent the room. We might need a Reservations and Events Assistant, which could cost us $18 per Tech Crew member per hour. There are also other materials and equipment we plan to buy, such as art supplies for embroidery and calligraphy ($100–$200), ingredients for dumplings ($100–$300), and traditional/folk costumes ($150–$250). Therefore, our budget for this event is between $800 to $1,000.
