Student leadership development: The heart and soul of Adventure Rec

Each year, more than 2,000 students participate in trips and other activities with UC Santa Cruz Adventure Rec. Adventure Rec student leaders are the foundation of many of these trips. Their leadership qualities help craft the magic of students' Adventure Rec outings, bringing lasting meaning to their moments of joy and discovery.

The Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment was created in 2018 to support leadership development among Adventure Rec's student field staff. Since then, the fund has exceeded $110,000, with over $8,000 in student leadership awards. Last year on Giving Day, 175 donors contributed $21,003, which funded numerous Rec Leader field-based trainings and workshops throughout the year.

Adventure Rec's Giving Day goal this year is to raise $15,000. Gifts received on Giving Day will once again go toward the endowment to provide student leadership development experiences in 2022 and 2023. Rec Leaders demonstrate a profound openness and eagerness to learn, grow, and share outdoor spaces with others. As a Rec Leader shared following our Mojave Desert Rock Climbing Training in March 2022:

“I will forever take with me the feeling of support and camaraderie I experienced during the toughest parts of some climbs, and the cathartic feeling of learning and fully leaning into a new skill. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn in such a wonderful and supportive community.”
