Research Ctr for Americas: Dolores Huerta Archives

Dear Community Member,

On Oct. 20, 2022, UC Santa Cruz celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Research Center for the Americas by officially renaming the center in honor of civil rights and feminist icon Dolores Huerta. The renaming is a tribute to her legacy and impact.

Now UC Santa Cruz wants to do more by working in partnership with the Dolores Huerta Foundation (DHF), and in cooperation with Dolores Huerta, to establish the Dolores Huerta Archives. You can play a critical role in providing the start-up funding needed for establishing these archives for future use by community members, journalists, researchers, and students, by making a gift on Giving Day, Nov. 2.

Dolores Huerta has been a shero to UC Santa Cruz students and faculty, who are inspired by her impact as an organizer, civil rights activist, feminist, and advocate for Latinx communities. As a labor leader, Huerta’s impact has reshaped the country while also setting the course for many of the advocacy efforts that continue today. Still, her achievements have not historically received the same level of recognition as her male peers and helping her and the foundation to establish the archives is an urgent corrective.

At a time when current political tides seek to write social justice leaders like Huerta out of the history books and to erode the progress they bravely fought for, UC Santa Cruz wants to ensure that Huerta’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. And with your support, UC Santa Cruz can play an important role.

Through the Dolores Huerta Archives project, you can help us ensure her legacy is preserved, which is one of the ways that UC Santa Cruz aspires to live up to the responsibility of bearing her name on our research center. Your financial support will help cover general expenses to ensure the archives project is successful.
