Cheers and Queers for expanding our Clothing Closet to include a Cantu Cosmetic Corner!

We will be fundraising to expand our current Clothing Closet to include cosmetics and hygiene products. The program provides support for the basic needs of queer and trans students, recognizing that access to resources that are safe and inclusive of queer and trans identities are limited both on and off campus. The closet has been and continues to be a needed source of support as students explore different ways to express their identities, by providing an affirming space and reducing financial barriers. The expansion of the closet has two goals:

  1. We recognize that being able to purchase/access clothing that reflects one’s identity is a challenge, which also means that being able to acquire things like makeup, nail polish, and hygiene products is also a challenge and financial stressor. These resources celebrate students in their wholeness.  
  2. By expanding the Clothing Closet to include cosmetics and other hygiene products, we also have the opportunity for innovative, creative programming such as makeup tutorials and discussions on queering, professional notions of how we present ourselves for interviews/work, navigating the confusion of various products, and providing tips/tricks to access these products in the future.  

 

Our desired goal is $3,500. Unlike our Clothing Closet, which is primarily supported through donations, we recognize that cosmetics and hygiene products will have to be purchased new in order for them to be used safely. We also acknowledge the need to provide an expansive and inclusive range of products in order to provide access for students with a range of skin tones, styles, and expression preferences. In the event that we have extra funds, we will stock up as much as we can for future years. Items we've identified, but are not limited to, include:

  • Foundation (for all skin tones)
  • Eye liner
  • Eye shadow
  • Lipstick 
  • Nail polish
  • Blush 
  • Deodorant 
  • Shampoo and conditioner 
  • Body wash 
  • Shaving razors 
  • Shaving cream/gel 
  • Toothpaste and tooth brushes 
  • And more!
