Robert (Bob) Ludwig was a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (MCD) from 1979 until his death in 2015. During his 36-year career at UCSC, Bob’s research addressed two of humanity’s most challenging problems: providing food to an ever-growing population and developing clean energy sources. A beloved teacher of biochemistry, Bob was awarded a Favorite Professor Award by the UCSC Student Alumni Council in 1992.
Bob’s family established the Robert A. Ludwig Memorial Graduate Scholarship Fund in 2015 to support graduate student research and development. The Department of MCD Biology has 72 graduate students whose research interests range from the basic structure and function of RNA to the functioning of the immune system to brain development.
What do we plan to do with the scholarship fund?
We will use the scholarship to expand educational opportunities for our graduate students. We are especially interested in opportunities at the legendary Marine Biological Laboratories (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, which offers 22 wide-ranging courses taught by internationally renowned scientists.
Quotes about MBL courses:
“I’m not sure there is anywhere in the world that is comparable to the MBL.”
“The freedom to ask whatever questions we want, the support, the materials, the microscopes…everything was phenomenal.”
What your donation will do:
The MBL provides tuition scholarships but does not provide funds for airfare and room and board ($3,000 to $4,100, depending on course duration). These costs are prohibitive to many of our students. Your donation can help with these expenses. A donation of $300, for example, will pay the round-trip airfare from San José, California, to Boston, Massachusetts. Thank you for enabling us to give our students the extraordinary opportunity to attend life-changing courses such as those offered at the MBL.
Our matching gift of $1,000 has been met today! Let's keep the support coming!
