Slug Model United Nations (SlugMUN) acts as a medium for students to explore international perspectives and global events while improving their public speaking skills at UC Santa Cruz. SlugMUN has two programs: a student-led 2-unit class called “UN Contemporary Issues” and a competitive club. SlugMUN’s programs provide opportunities for students to grow by exploring global current events, learning international perspectives, and offering unique leadership positions.
Funds for SlugMUN will be directed toward paying fees necessary to continue offering the “UN Contemporary Issues” class and providing need-based funding for financially struggling team members to attend conferences. Financial stability will allow our student leaders to continue creating an innovative class and training an already award-winning team to compete against other U.S. schools. Funds will also be directed toward hosting a UCSC Model United Nations conference in Spring quarter of 2018.
The “UN Contemporary Issues” class is the largest student-led and student-taught class at UCSC, with more than 70 students. Students learn MUN procedure and gain hands-on experience with two countries' perspectives on two different issues. The class alone provides nearly 15 opportunities for teaching related leadership roles.
The award-winning SlugMUN club competes against locally and nationally prestigious schools. We have attended 10 conferences in the 2016–17 academic year but still struggle with providing funds for all team members. Every team member is integral to representing UCSC. We want to provide our members with travel opportunities regardless of any financial hardships. Your donation will enable us to reach our goals.
SlugMUN’s goal is to promote awareness of international perspectives and global current events. A gift to SlugMUN will support the SlugMUN team in providing opportunities for UCSC students to learn about international perspectives and global current events, as well as to provide need-based aid for our delegates so all of our team can travel.
