Who is the UCSC SACNAS Chapter?
We are a collegiate group fully committed to creating a supportive community for minority students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. In addition to our studies, we collaborate with Santa Cruz County community K-12 schools to connect them with the beauty of science and research in engaging, fun ways. Our next goal is to help our members attend the 2017 SACNAS National Conference to gain valuable exposure to current research, mentorship, career development workshops, networking, possible graduate/summer research programs, and much more.
But we need your help.
Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science was founded in 1973 by a small group of scientists who believed in diversifying the sciences. Over the years it has expanded to more than 6,000 members. UCSC SACNAS is proud to be one of 115 professional and student chapters’ nationwide. Our chapter members have exposed students from local middle /high schools to fun and interactive experiments, school visits to the UCSC campus, and personal perspective of college life from current UCSC students. This level of engagement provides students from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM the chance to be part of a network from an early age and increases their chances of pursuing and completing a college degree in STEM.
