Founded in 1967, the UCSC Men's Rugby Football Club is the oldest intercollegiate club on campus and the first to call themselves the "Slugs." Through the years, the greatest limitation to the club's success has undoubtedly been training field access and availability. Thanks to a recent donation by rugby alum George Kraw, the Slugs have reached last year's goal of purchasing lights for night training and now boast 6 light towers, greatly increasing the club's opportunity to train and progress. Overcoming this huge obstacle has put the club on the path to compete at a level that few Slug teams have ever seen.
In order to take full advantage of this new opportunity, the financial burden on Slug Rugby student-athletes must be minimized or eliminated. The Men's Rugby Club prides itself on being the all-inclusive and one of the most diverse clubs at UCSC. However, the ability to pay dues to fund travel and equipment remains the single most limiting factor for many students. Until every student has the financial possibility to participate, Slug Rugby will be at a disadvantage when compared to top tier-teams.
With your support, our goal is to raise at least $20,000 to help cover next year's operating budget. With a standing matching offer of up to $10,000, we are already half-way there! Our operating budget covers player equipment, travel, lodging and coaching development and is necessarily funded through a combination of Alumni donations, fundraising, and dues paid by students. It is our ultimate goal to completely eliminate the need for students to pay to play and give everyone the opportunity to be a Slug Rugger.
Your generous donation today will help to reach our Giving Day goal of at least $10,000 and keep Slug Rugby growing toward the highest level of competition. Go Slugs!
