Plant Sciences Fund
Help support Plant Science students at UC Santa Cruz!

Together, we can:

  1. Ensure funding for the Plant Science Award, which supports emerging scientists conducting greenhouse research projects by covering research expenses.
  2. Provide enrichment opportunities for the Plant Sciences Club, including guest speakers, skills workshops, field trips to explore career paths, botany hikes, restoration work days, and more!
  3. Build a supportive community and identity for our Plant Science Programs, which continue to produce passionate and knowledgeable ecologists who make a difference in the workforce!

Research projects previously funded by the Plant Sciences Fund include:

  • Does phenotypic plasticity or local adaptation explain variation in traits of California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)?
  • Can CRISPR/Cas9 engineer viral immunity to the lettuce mosaic virus (LMV)?
  • How do different ecotypes of blue oak (Quercus douglasii) perform across wet and dry sites in California, and what are the consequences for climate change resilience?
  • Does invasive stinkwort (Dittrichia graveolens) change soil conditions to facilitate its own growth or inhibit other species?
  • Can electricity from cacti offer a new biodiversity-friendly renewable energy source?
  • How do plant pathogens and herbivory influence woody shrub recruitment in gaps caused by manzanita dieback?
  • What is the genetic basis of adaptation in two neotropical spiral gingers (Costus)?
  • Does seeding vs. transplanting result in different seed bank composition in restored California coastal grasslands?
  • Do past water conditions influence Joshua tree photosynthetic rehydration kinetics?
  • Does native plant restoration modify soils to promote an invasive legume (Genista monspessulana)?
  • Redwoods and drought stress: what is the relationship between cambial viability and tree survival?
