Psychology Department Internship Award

About 70+ students participate in the Psychology Field Study Program each quarter as a way to experience a career path related to psychology and acquire real world experience that will give them a step up in grad school applications and future job searches. Our students work in various organizations throughout Santa Cruz County supporting the physical, mental and emotional well-being of our community.

A challenging aspect of the program is that a majority of the internships are still unpaid, so many students are having to support themselves via scholarships and loans or another paid job that they need to balance with their field study and academic commitments. This can cause those in unpaid internships additional stress and take away from what should be an enriching experience. It is also a barrier to students who are considering participating in the program.

The Psychology Department would like to remove as many barriers as we can to the professional development of our students. We’d like to provide significant award amounts to students in unpaid internships in our field study program to provide assistance with living expenses and costs related to field study (work attire, transportation costs, etc.) so they are able to focus on their personal and professional growth during their 20-week internships.

Students that participated in our program have described their experience as:

“Like no other! It was one of the only opportunities in my entire psychology education that really allowed me to see what the career field is like.”

“Eye-opening. I did not know I was going to enjoy working with seniors that much. It definitely gave me a new perspective and a new direction for my future goals.”

Please consider giving to our fund to allow more students to have a truly meaningful internship experience. Your $50 donation can buy a student a tank of gas to travel to their internship site, groceries for the week or 1 business casual outfit!
