Summer Short Course in Bioinformatics and Coding
Help us train students in coding and bioinformatics!

“For me, being able to do the bioinformatics workshop in my summer before UCSC allowed me to gain confidence in the fact that I can get into this obscure field of science. I had not ever considered myself adept at using computers and I think that this course opened those doors for me to continue head-on into bioinformatics.”

- Short course participant Carlos Garcia Guerrero

Your donation to our Summer Short Course in Bioinformatics and Coding for community college students and the Bioinformatics Summer Bridge Course for incoming frosh and transfer students will help provide training in computational genomics for students who might not otherwise have access to such courses. These free online intensives are designed to engage, empower, and inspire first-generation college students and learners from groups that are historically underrepresented in STEM fields.

Programming and biology are typically taught separately, but bioinformaticians are expected to combine and apply the two on the fly. We have designed courses that introduce questions in biology that can be answered using programming components that we teach simultaneously. Our courses are designed to create a sense of belonging and to empower participants as they build essential data science skills with applications in genomics, cancer research, and bioinformatics.

The technologies we create in the field of genomics are shaping the future of human health, and we want that future to be as inclusive as possible. Please consider a gift of any amount to help the Genomics Institute Office of Diversity spread opportunities to participate in genomics to students of all backgrounds!
