Adventure Rec Student Leadership
Supporting Student Leadership at Adventure Rec

Student leadership is a core value of UC Santa Cruz Adventure Rec, and student Rec Leaders are the foundation of the nearly 100 trips offered annually. Their leadership qualities help craft the magic of students' Adventure Rec outings, bringing lasting meaning to moments of joy and discovery. Each year, around 1,000 students participate in trips and other activities with Adventure Rec.

The Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment was created in 2018 to support leadership development among Adventure Rec's student field staff. Since then, the fund has exceeded $130,000, with over $11,000 given in student leadership awards. 

Adventure Rec's Giving Day goal is to raise $15,000. Gifts received on Giving Day will once again go toward the endowment to provide student leadership development experiences in 2023 and 2024. Last year, student leaders participated in a range of training opportunities, including half-day river and sea kayaking workshops, as well as a weeklong skills development Sierra expedition. Rec Leaders demonstrate a profound openness and eagerness to learn, grow, and share outdoor spaces with others. Following a seven-day Rec Leader Sierra Backpacking Training in September, Rec Leaders reflected on their growth:

“The properly applied challenge and struggle with the right level of support can create resilient and strong people. It really resonated with me and is something I want to bring to other people the way it was brought to me.“

“I will definitely take away the experience of leading off-trail navigation with a group, especially in that terrain. Also the lessons on leadership styles, risk management, and decision making will definitely stick with me, as well as just how amazing the Rec community is and how grateful I am to be a part of it!”
