Since its founding in 1965, the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been home to many Chicane and Latine students. These students are an integral part of the fabric of the university, and as the years progressed, the amount of Latinx student representation has grown. As a result, UCSC has become a leader in the retention and graduation of Chicanx Latinx scholars, and in 2012 was named a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). As of January 2021, UCSC is one of 539 Hispanic-Serving Institutions and one of only 22 Hispanic-Serving Research Institutions. In addition to its work as a Hispanic-serving institution, UC Santa Cruz has a long Latinx-serving history through student organizations, research, and academics. The Chicanx Latinx Resource Center, better known as El Centro, has served since 1995 as a hub of organized activity and resources that support student transition, retention, graduation, and academic advancement.
What is CLYEC?
The Chicanx Latinx Year-End Ceremony (CLYEC) is a community celebration for students who self-identify with the Chicane and Latine community on campus and is organized by El Centro.
How have UCSC students benefited from CLYEC?
For over 50 years, CLYEC has celebrated the academic and cultural successes of graduating students with ceremony, live music, guest speakers, and graduate speeches. Annually, the CLYEC committee is formed by staff from El Centro, students, and volunteers to create a memorable celebration.
What will your money fund?
The funds raised through Giving Day will cover the cost of the cultural stoles, which graduating students wear with pride to their college commencements and the Chicanx Latinx Year-End Ceremony. Each cultural stole costs $25 per student, and every year we have at least 400 students participate in CLYEC. Help us reach our goal of $10,000 by donating today!
The funds raised will also help make this celebration possible, honor the sacrifices and commitments of graduates and their families to achieve this milestone, and build on the legacy of Latine communities on campus.
We intend to continue the tradition at El Centro, where alumni pay it forward and gift a cultural sash to a future Slug. For those who donate, you will have the option to have your name featured in the CLYEC program and website.
Your support is crucial to recognizing past and future graduates. Donate now to the 52nd Chicanx Latinx Year-End Ceremony!
