Empower Student Filmmakers and Amplify Incarcerated Voices

This year, it's time to embrace a transformative collaboration that empowers and amplifies the voices that have been silenced by the carceral system. Undergraduate students from the Everett Program are partnering with Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, a formerly incarcerated filmmaker, and his collective, Empowerment Avenue, to assist in the production of two powerful documentaries.

What is the Everett Program?

The Everett Program for Technology and Social Change develops leaders who utilize university resources, collaborate with communities worldwide, and employ technology to address social issues, fostering practical and sustainable solutions rooted in a commitment to social justice and environmental regeneration.

Who is Rahsaan "New York" Thomas?

Rahsaan "New York" Thomas is an award winning journalist, podcast host, and filmmaker whose journey as an artist and social justice advocate began while he was incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. He is now the Executive Director of Empowerment Avenue, an organization that works to develop the careers of incarcerated writers, artists, and journalists pre-entry.

Empowerment Avenue Films:

1. "DaKulture" - Step into the incredible story of an incarcerated man's unwavering determination to direct a film, defying all odds and transcending the barriers of prison life.

2️.  "Silent Treatment" - Get ready for a powerful feature-length documentary that amplifies the voices of deaf incarcerated individuals as they rise against adversity, demanding equality and justice. This is a narrative of strength and change.

The Student Revolution:

Our Everett students will be deeply involved in these projects. They'll be engaged at every stage, from managing cameras and equipment to editing and post production. Your support is the essential to the production these films, covering vital expenses such as equipment, post-production software, and enabling students to work closely with incarcerated artists and have a hands-on learning experience that transcends the classroom.

The Power of Change:

By contributing to our initiative, you're not just supporting the creation of these important documentaries. You are empowering students to become advocates for justice, social change, and a powerful bridge connecting incarcerated storytellers to the global stage.

Be the Spark:

Be the spark that ignites change. Join us in normalizing the inclusion of incarcerated writers and artists in mainstream venues by bridging the gap between them.

Your support is the catalyst that drives this movement forward. Thank you for being a part of our mission in amplifying incarcerated voices.
