Fog Research Lab
FOG ON! Welcome To Giving Day 2023 at UC Santa Cruz !!!

For the next 24 hours we are asking you: our friends, our families, environmentalists and sustainability conscious, fog enthusiasts, and all who reach this page to join our challenge of raising $1000 for the Fog Research Group run by P.I. Peter Weiss-Penzias. These donations will help the continuation of our fog-based projects and research during one of the biggest and highest returning fundraisers of the year!

Why the Fog Research Lab?

The Fog Research Lab in the division of Physical and Biological Sciences, is focused on generating funds for furthering research in two main areas: economical water-harvesting of fog for irrigation purposes, and monitoring trace elements carried about in the fog from the ocean. Under the supervision of PI Peter Weiss-Penzias, the Fog Research Lab currently serves 2 undergraduate students to achieve new heights in their path to a bachelor's degree, while also making contributions in the fields of environmental engineering and atmospheric chemistry. The findings of this research have recently been featured in a major media report:

The Elusive Future of San Francisco's Fog - New York Times, Sept. 14, 2022

Our research is timely for a drought-stricken world as we are demonstrating sustainable solutions that we are communicating through our outreach efforts to city municipalities, non-profit groups, and K-12 schools.

Our interdisciplinary team of researchers is enthusiastically chasing fog, but we need more financial support to reach our goals.

What are your donations going to help with?

The first $1000 we raise will be spent on:

  1. Build prototype fog collector that can be mounted on greenhouses on farms to supply summertime water where it is needed without expanding the footprint of built structures ($400)
  2. Support paid undergraduate student research ($300 travel to conference to present)
  3. Development of new sensory devices ($300 for circuit-building supplies)
