Full time field study is a life changing experience and the heart and soul of the Community Studies major. Every student spends six months immersed in social justice organizations working on the critical issues of our time. Alumni report their field studies nurtured passions and interests that define their lives and careers forever after. Some start new organizations based on these field studies, others become leaders in existing enterprises from government to non-profits to private businesses. Wherever they go, Community Studies majors engage with a social justice perspective and bring both the skills and determination to make a difference.
Unlike many internship programs, full-time field study is not optional; it’s a requirement. It’s an exciting, irreplaceable part of the major, yet in an era of rising tuition and fees as well as shocking housing costs, financial concerns can affect students’ choices. Fully 60% of Community Studies majors belong to under-represented groups and Giving Day will directly and entirely support scholarships for field study students to help defray tuition and living expenses while they pursue and study social justice work that will change their lives (forever).
