As a ballroom couple takes their place on the floor, they know it's time to show off everything they've been working for and ramp up their energy 150 percent when the announcer says, "Cue music." And then they dance.
The UCSC ballroom team is a student-led organization that provides opportunities to learn ballroom dances both competitively and socially. Ballroom dance is a fun, physical, and mental way to exercise, compete, relieve stress, meet new friends, and learn new skills. We offer weekly social dance lessons, weekly competitive instruction, and quarterly dance parties, and we attend several annual intercollegiate competitions.
Our Giving Day project this year is called "Cue Music: Dancing Slugs," as we hope to get as many students on the dance floor as possible by hosting professional dance instructors at UC Santa Cruz. Our goal is to raise $1,000, which will allow us to bring in two guest instructors a quarter during the next school year. These lessons are open to anyone and everyone regardless of experience. Just one lesson increases our ability to teach dancing to other students on campus.
Dancing has changed our lives, and we want to be able to help as many people as possible explore ballroom dancing. "Cue Music" is more than just a project title. It's the first thing you hear before your first competition. It's the two words that tell you it's go time. It means "the floor is yours, so do something great."
