Each year for more than three decades, the Carl Mark Deppe Lecture has brought to campus a distinguished scholar to deliver a lecture on the ancient world aimed at an undergraduate audience; after the lecture, students and faculty gather for a reception with the speaker. We are raising funds to continue this annual tradition in honor of Carl Deppe, a classics and philosophy major who was killed by a drunk driver in his sophomore year. He wrote that he wanted to use his time at UC to ask the big questions and “to be ready for what the world has to offer.” He was a student who (in the words of his UCSC friend Michael Blum) "challenged conventional wisdom" and "brought out the best" in his friends.
