The Human Rights Investigations Lab for the Americas trains students in the emerging field of digital verification, which uses “open-source investigation” tools and techniques to find and verify facts. Students in the lab learn to sift through social media postings, news media footage, satellite imagery, Google Maps, and other internet sources to investigate human rights abuses in the Americas and around the world.
Launched in Fall 2019, the Human Rights Investigations Lab for the Americas offers digital verification support to non-governmental organizations, news outlets, and other advocacy partners that are conducting open source investigations. This lab harnesses digital technologies to address and confront human rights violations.
The lab’s social justice mission is to track and monitor ongoing humanitarian, environmental and socio-political crises throughout the Americas to promote justice and achieve accountability for communities adversely affected by human rights violations and potential war crimes.
Housed in the Research Center for the Americas, undergraduate and graduate students of all divisions are accepted into the lab. Students are expanding their skills gained from the lab by placing in jobs where they are challenging the online spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories, as well as working with public health practitioners to develop resiliency curriculum for digital investigators.
