Norris Center Art+Science Initiative

Match Opportunity: Generous donors are matching all donations, dollar for dollar, up to $2,000.

By supporting the art+science initiatives at the Norris Center for Natural History, you are contributing to expand the resources and opportunities that we offer to students. Your gift not only enhances their educational art+science experiences on campus but also supports us in providing exceptional professional development experience that will follow students far beyond their undergraduate careers!

Through our arts initiative we are focusing on programs to support:

Interdisciplinary Skills Development
For over 5 years we have been creating new natural history inspired arts programming for students. This includes a bi-annual art course, art workshops taught by outstanding arts professionals, and art events that build community around issues in art, science, social justice and the environment. Each year we witness student’s artistic skills soar in response to these opportunities.

Focused Mentoring and Arts Residency Opportunities
We provide targeted arts mentoring for diverse students through individual opportunities and with our art and science residency program which is aimed at promoting science communication while advancing equity and inclusion in underrepresented fields. Our highly successful residency program pairs student artists with faculty and graduate student researchers under the mentorship of our art+science director. Students have embedded within exciting research projects around the world to inform their artworks. These projects have included climate change research in Joshua Tree National Park, traditional environmental management in Micronesia, and tropical forest restoration in Costa Rica.

Professional Art Exhibition and Publication Experiences
By providing individualized professional development support for our students and a variety of opportunities to gain professional exhibition and publication experience, we prepare our students to be competitive and successful in their careers. With our support, our students' work has been exhibited and featured in numerous conferences, publications, galleries, museums, and at the Cal Academy of Sciences.

Your gift, no matter the amount, supports interdisciplinary art+science opportunities for our students.
