We are heading back to Okinawa in the summer of 2022 for the first time since the pandemic struck. Over the past seven years, our team of students and researchers has traveled to Okinawa to learn the stories and lived experiences of the people of Okinawa through WWII and the early years of US military bases. This trip will be the culmination of years of work, and an incredible opportunity for students to see the global impact of building an inclusive historical narrative through the Okinawa Memories Initiative (OMI).
"I never would have fully realized my passions for cultural history and storytelling without OMI. Inspired by the oral history interviews I helped facilitate in Okinawa, I've started conducting life history interviews with my own family members, encouraging intergenerational conversations about Japanese-American identity that my family has never had. Now, I'm planning to apply to UCLA's Asian American Studies Masters program to study documentary filmmaking under Renee Tajima Peña. Thanks OMI!"—Miki Arlen, 2018 & 2019 Summers in Okinawa.
In 2018 and 2019, we built intergenerational relationships through photo exhibits and oral history interviews. Now it’s time to bring in a new group of students.
Help us get there!
Your gift supports OMI student team members to travel and do hands-on research in Okinawa; our goal is to fully fund eight or more students on our team.
