Match Opportunity: The Friends of the Dickens Project is generously matching your gift, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000.
Help under-served, first-generation California high school students experience the works of Charles Dickens!
Since 2015, the Dickens Project has partnered with the Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) in South Los Angeles to bring students and teachers together for a week of intensive study in Santa Cruz at the Dickens Universe conference. NAI is a rigorous enrichment program designed to prepare under-served, first-generation students for admission to a college or university.
The Friends of the Dickens Project support the students on every step of their journey by providing copies of the books and funding all-expense-paid scholarships to the world-renowned Dickens Universe, where the students not only benefit from the lectures, panel discussions, and small group sessions but have the opportunity to contribute their knowledge alongside world-class scholars.
"Being part of the Dickens Universe has meant so much to me...there are students here in the South Central area who are stereotyped to go down the wrong path."—Juliana Veliz, NAI class of 2019
"The Dickens Universe...helps us break down something so complicated as Dickens's literature. Because of them, we were able to connect an 18th-century time period to our very own community out here in L.A."—Romell McKenzie, NAI class of 2019
Please help us continue our support for NAI and expand our high school outreach to local schools in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties. With your help, students and teachers will be enabled to participate in a Dickens Day of Writing event that combines analytic reading with focused writing exercises centered on issues of social justice in their local communities.
Your Giving Day donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 by generous contributions from the Friends of the Dickens Project.
Encourage and inspire the next generation of readers and scholars and donate now!
