Pacific Art & Visual Studies (PAVS) is the study of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) arts and cultures. The PAVS Fund furthers teaching, research, and service activities in art history and visual culture studies. It also supports Pacific Arts, the only international open access, online, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to the study of Pacific Island art.
Concerted efforts need to be taken to lift, honor, and celebrate AAPI arts, cultures, and heritages. These are at the center of community activism, identity expression, healing, maintaining ties to histories and ancestors, cultural knowledge transmission, creating a sense of place and belonging, and forging sustainable futures. PAVS contributes to the understanding of humanity––of our past and its relationship to our present as embodied in art, cultural objects, photographs, performance, and other forms of creative expression.
Given the severe effects of climate change on the Pacific Islands, alarming increase in anti-AAPI discrimination and hate crimes, ongoing effects of colonialism, and, as reported by the CDC in 2021, the disproportionately negative impact of COVID-19 on Pacific Islanders compared to other groups, it is especially urgent to support the voices and interests of AAPI communities.
The PAVS Fund is housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), which is designated as an Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), but relies entirely on extramural funding. This educational fund advances UCSC’s impact on Pacific Island studies as the only institution in California that offers a PhD program in Pacific Island Art and Visual Culture. Your contribution will have a lasting impact on AAPI arts scholarship.
