The Center to Advance Mentored, Inquiry-Based Opportunities (CAMINO) is an inclusive community that aims to propel excellence by diverse undergraduates in ecology and conservation. Motivated and capable students engage in hands-on conservation research through funded research and field-based experiences.
Our high-impact field experiences alongside professional ecologists and conservation scientists elevate not only students’ skills and experience but also their professional networks, sense of belonging in the environmental field, and understanding of their efficacy as agents of significant positive change even before they complete college. CAMINO offers 8-week, paid research internships for undergraduates from UC Santa Cruz with mentors whose research spans a diverse array of research topics, study system, and field/lab settings. Our staff work with students one-on-one to understand their individual science interests and work preferences to pair them with mentors and organizations best able to support them as people and expand their skill sets and experience. Internship mentors are faculty, researchers, and graduate students across UCSC science departments who have a unifying interest in ecology or conservation and who are dedicated to forming a diverse, inclusive community that will train and support our future leaders in conservation.
Where will your dollars go?
Any funds that you pledge today go directly to our students! We are hoping to raise $4500 which is the amount needed to pay one undergraduate research and one graduate mentor for 8 weeks of hands-on research next summer. Any amounts over the initial goal will go towards running workshops and purchasing field equipment that is available to all undergraduates.
