Why does the Queer and Trans Library Makeover Project matter?
The Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center is seeking to fundraise for our Queer and Trans Library Makeover Project. Our fundraising goal is $2,000, which will allow us to purchase a new book case to store our growing collection, along with new books, graphic novels, comic books, and similar media. Our much-needed update aligns with our commitment as a Queer Student Center to providing relevant and current titles that represent diverse Queer and Trans stories. Maintaining an LGBTQIA+ library for Queer and Trans students opens another opportunity to expand their social imaginations of what it might mean to be Queer and Trans, and tells students that their stories are important. Our library also provides allies, accomplices, and folks who are just looking to learn with a space to grow their understanding of Queer and Trans history, culture, and expression outside of the classroom. With the completion of this project, we hope to provide a restored, flourishing, and welcoming Queer and Trans Library.
How did you pick the books on your list?
All of the books on our list are recommendations from students! See our list here (link)!
What will you do if you raise more than $2,000 during Spring Give?
Any money we raise beyond our goal will be used to support the Cantú’s Emergency Fund for Queer and Trans Students. We use these funds to help Queer and Trans students who come to us expressing need around food insecurity, housing, gender affirming care, and more!
The Cantú and what we do!
The Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center is the nexus of support and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community at the University of California, Santa Cruz. We create co-curricular experiences with students, staff, and faculty to challenge cisheteronormative understandings of gender and sexuality. We build a more inclusive campus community with and for all Queer and Trans people by providing essential resources and education through programming, workshops, and critical dialogues.
