The PinnipedLab at UC Santa Cruz is a special place. Located at Long Marine Laboratory on the beautiful Coastal Science Campus, the program is home for students and animals working together to explore the perceptual, cognitive, and physiological capabilities of amphibious marine mammals.
The program is powered by a dedicated team of volunteer research assistants and interns who are primarily UC Santa Cruz undergraduates or recent graduates. These individuals care for our resident seals and sea lions year-round and are some of the hardest working, happiest, and most collaborative and capable people you will ever meet. Our students receive comprehensive, hands-on training in all areas of marine mammal research, ranging from animal care to data management and operational support. They support us every day of the year, rain or shine, tromping through winds and wet weather to sort through piles of frozen fish and run hundreds of behavioral research trials.
A gift to the program enables the participation of UCSC undergraduates in our core training program --a boot camp for students interested in organismal biology, marine science, psychology, computer sciences, and the arts. We are committed to fostering the growth and professional development of our amazing students while at same time increasing quality of care for the special seals and sea lions we study. This is your chance to help!
